Gato Cansado

We stayed here several nights on our honeymoon. While away one afternoon, the place was broken into by thieves and ransacked. The safe was broken open and hundreds of dollars of cash was stolen as well as several electronic items. There is not padlock at all on the garden gate or the main gate allowing free access to the house by anyone. We were not reimbursed at all for our stay by the owner.

Cozy, comfortable, clean, and close to everything. We liked to walk and either 2 or 4 wheels get you to the beach, bars, and shops. Secure property at a great price! 10/10 would stay there again. smiley face

Construction next door, made it awful!!!
Posted on: 12/12/2014
My husband and I ended up only staying here one night! The owner e-mailed us the night before we left for our trip telling us of the construction next door and asking if we wanted to stay somewhere else. We did not have the time to change. But after our arrival there, we were VERY disappointed. The construction is right next door!! And they started hammering and sawing at 6am. There were also bugs in the house, and my husband ended up killing a scorpion in the kitchen. We have asked for a refund of the next 2 nights we didn't stay, but the owner would only give us one night's payment back. The construction is not even close to being finished, so I could think wisely before staying here!
Response
Dear Amanda,

Thank you for your comment. We, the property managers in Nosara, are sorry for the inconvenience you experienced while staying at Gato Cansado. Unfortunately, the construction next door was out of any one's control, and we had assurance in the past that it would be done by November 1st, then December 15th... When we realized that it was not going to be done by the time you arrived, we let the owners know and they informed you of the situation. The construction is now finished as new owners just moved in today. Landscaping is what is left at this point and that should not be noisy. As for bugs, the house is located in the jungle and the domain of a lot of critters. For future potential renters, please note that scorpions in Costa Rica are not fatal. As for your refund, this was the owner's decision, and we will make sure that they read your comment.

Gato Cansado was the perfect vacation rental! It was the perfect size for the two of us with all of the conveniences of home. We were close enough to the town and beach to walk to and from the house, but just far enough away to have peace and quiet and to spot some of the wildlife. The pool and grounds were beautifully maintained by a super friendly staff, and we felt the house was safe and secure. Gato Cansado is a beautiful, cozy retreat and we can't wait to stay there again in the near future!

My visit to Gato Cansado was peaceful, relaxing and beautiful! If is the perfect rental for a couple or small family. Gato Cansado is tucked away in the rainforest but still just a short walk to the beach! The property and pool are well kept and in good condition. I can't wait to visit again!

... and that's about it. My wife and I stayed at gs for 4 days. Every amenity listed was there and that's it. If you decide to cook, be prepared to buy all seasonings and sauces. Everything was pretty well maintained. The window screens have many holes in them and allow in bugs. There is a cow or mule that walks in the woods past the house nightly that could be mistaken for a potential burglar. Bring a flashlight because you wont find one in the house. The house feels a bit isolated being at the end of a dead end road. There are other houses near by (and a night club with-in an ear shot but that is now closed) but if you are looking for the security of a close community, you may want to look elsewhere. It is just a short drive to town, the beach, and all the activities in Nosara. The management company, Mango PM, was great though. They kept the house, yard and pool clean. In retrospect, for the cost, I would stay at a B&B; for the added security and amenities.

Clean, private and just plain awesome!

We had a great time at Gato Cansado! The place is close enough to the beach and amenities but far enough up the road to be private and quiet. It was clean and perfect size for a couple. We enjoyed walking to the beach and also walking to the Nosara Yoga Institute! Look at the map included in the binder for places to visit. The property managers were also informative and very efficient. The pool was perfect for cooling off. Two thumbs up! One tip: Bring an mp3 player or cds! They have a great outside stereo. While we enjoyed the local radio stations, some tunes would have been good too!

Gato Cansado was a honeymoon heaven.

We wanted a private location that was close to the beach, but more private than a resort or hotel. Gato Cansado gave us that feel. We made many of our breakfasts at home (GC), some dinners, and while the kitchen tools are definitely used often, we were able to pump out some tasty food! Sidenote: Go to the M/W/F morning vegetable truck outside of Robin's for fresh & CHEAP produce. Back to the casita: The locks were secure, there was a safe, linens, towels, a local phone & WIFI are provided. The pool temperature was perfect while we were there and it was SO great to be able to cool off without worrying about other people. There were also quite a few services provided: pool maintenance person comes once a week to clean the pool (the net is left at the house also so you can clean too). Our stay was 10 days long, so the house cleaner came on Saturday to clean; she did dishes, laundry, floors, etc. It was great! The property management company was available to answer questions and send any help we needed. A/C: We paid the extra fee to make AC available, however, it is really common for the AC unit to trip the breaker. After that happened to us two times in a row, we decided to not use the AC at all. With the windows having glass shutters instead of window panes, it would have been pointless to 'cool' the house anyway. My advice: don't buy AC and drink cold cocktails during the hottest part of the day to cool you down. We truly did not need AC. Most favorite thing Front porch and pool Least favorite thing The house IS on top of a hill and we had not considered the effect a hill would have on our decision to ride bicycles for transport. We ended up walking our bikes up the hill every time we came home. I would still stay at Gato Cansado again, and would rent bicycles again, but it would be a luxury to have a golf cart or ATV instead. Loved Gato Cansado. We were very happy with our choice and all the amenities!

Couldn't ask for a better place

Staying here for 4 nights was given to us as a honeymoon gift. We could not have asked for more! Secluded, up in the trees, and yet only a 5 min. (at most) walk to the beach or town. We even had access to bikes! It was perfect. We had a kitchen, cold tub, comfy bedroom, and lovely shower. We stayed at an exclusive hotel several nigts later in Mal Pais to mix it up and I wanted to go back!

My husband and I stayed in Gato Cansado for 4 nights in mid July. The house was just what my husband and I needed for our Costa Rican get-away! Gato Cansado is set back a little ways from the beach in the jungle, but it is a walkable distance. We did rent a car while we were there, so glad we did! It was nice to be able to get around the town when we wanted. If you don't rent a car, be sure to rent an ATV while you are in Nosara! We were awoken each morning to the chatter of the howler monkeys just outside of our window. The little pool was refreshing after a day of walking about the beach and surfing. We went shopping at the local "super" and cooked breakfast for ourselves most mornings - the kitchen was well equipped. The house was very clean and we always felt safe. It was wonderful to have laundry facilities! The weather was beautiful, despite it being "rainy season". And we were very pleased with our trip to this charming little beach town. For those who are unfamiliar with Nosara, it is quite tiny. Do not expect anything like Tamarindo. The entire area is dirt roads. It's nearly 2 hours to Nicoya (the closest paved roads). From Gata Consado, you can drive to a shopping center in about 5 minutes where you can find food, and rent bikes, surfboards, and ATVS. The drive to the actual town of Nosara is about a 20 minute drive - not far in distance, but you have to drive quite slowly. Again, if you don't have a car, get an ATV. It's definitely the local's choice way to travel. We recommend Monkey Quad Rentals. Overall, we thought Gato Consado was a wonderful little gem! You will certainly enjoy your stay!
